Veni, vidi... video?

Hi Reader,

A wise man once said that all podcasts are basically going to be in video format in the future, so make sure to video record each episode and upload it straight to YouTube, starting yesterday.

And I don't necessarily disagree. But I don't 100% agree either.

There was a lot of talk at the London Podcast Show 2024 about video podcasting. YAP Media said that video-first podcasters are the ones who thrive in these uncertain times in the audio market.

I'll be the first to say that video podcasting gives a couple of advantages, including greater discoverability. You can upload the video of your podcast recording to YouTube and chunk it down into clips for your Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter followers.

This gets your podcast content in front of new eyes on platforms built for discoverability. It also serves to remind your current audience that you're still there and you still have stuff to say.

BUT

I still come down on the side that you don't have to have video.

Because if the thought of perfecting your lighting set-up, appearing on camera, editing your footage and managing a YouTube channel puts you off making your podcast in the first place, it's not worth it.

And there are other ways to grow your podcast that don't depend on turning it into a vlog, like guesting on other podcasts and optimising your podcast for discoverability on your hosting platform.

So overall, video: Nice to have. Great to have, actually.

But don't let it get in the way of making your podcast dreams become an audio reality.

Because your podcast still deserves to be made, video or no video.

Have a great day!

Hey Reader, Podcasts about podcasting are a bit meta. And podcasting about emailing for podcasters is niche. So we're about to get META NICHE. This is an email about a podcast episode that talks about emailing for podcasters. It's ok if you need to read that twice. Last week, I was so happy to guest on a podcast episode of Podcasting Smarter, the podcast that gives tips and best practices to help your podcast thrive with less effort on your end. I gave host Norma Jean my top #5 hacks to...

Hey Reader, Podcast monetisation is easier than you think. A new survey showed that only 26% of indie podcasters are actively monetising their content, with other podcasters holding back from monetisation because they don’t know how or don’t have the time. The big picture: Technology has made podcast monetisation easier and more accessible. The most successful route to monetisation is through ad placements, with 27% of monetising podcasters earning through ads. Donations and selling a product...
